Learning from the past is one of the most important things we can do for the future. Encouraging children to understand their own heritage as well as delving into the unique and diverse histories of other countries opens their eyes to our changing world, and history school trips help them to draw links to the past in their own lives.

Our planet is incredible. Who can fail to marvel at the diversity of landscapes David Attenborough has brought into our living rooms, be amazed to learn that at certain times of the year you can walk from the U.S. to Russia, or wonder at the fact that continents shift at the same rate as our fingernails grow? And that’s only physical geography – human geography can be equally amazing. Did you know that California has more people than the whole of Canada?
The current emphasis the world over on the educational importance of STEM (or, increasingly, STEAM) has more than a little to do with the growing shortage of workers with STEM-based skills. In order to close this gap, we must encourage young children to pursue scientific subjects. How? At primary level, this could simply mean making science practical and hands-on – and fun.
We are fortunate to live in a country with an outstanding list of writers, both past and present, who have contributed so much to both literature and the English language. From Shakespeare and Dickens to Beatrix Potter and J.K. Rowling, we enjoy a wealth of stories, folklore, plays, poems and films which make us laugh and cry, frighten, entertain and teach us.

P.E. is a prime area of focus in primary schools, which we think is fantastic! The physical education opportunities available are opened up with the increased sports premium funding that all schools receive, so children have access to more sports than ever before.

Art in the classroom is often chaotic, messy and fun, and provides children with the opportunity to get creative and inventive, use their imaginations and practise self-expression, as well as their fine motor skills.

Learning music has myriad benefits. It’s not only enjoyable, but studies have shown that understanding music can benefit overall mental development and improves memory – it has even been linked with helping pupils to understand maths.

With knowledge, experience and expertise in STEM subjects becoming increasingly valuable in today’s world, the skills and information learned in design and technology, even from (or perhaps especially from) a young age, are becoming ever more important.
Maths definitely doesn’t deserve the reputation it sometimes gets so it’s important to show your pupils just how creative and exciting it can be – and how it has so many links into everyday life. There are tons of ways to make maths fun in the classroom and even to teach primary school children maths when they don’t even realise that’s what you’re doing. But a maths class trip?
Computing and IT are increasingly important lessons for primary school children, especially as we attempt to close the often-discussed STEM skills gap and encourage more girls to take up STEM and computing-related subjects later on in education.
