Art school trip ideas for primary schools
Educational visits linked to the National Curriculum for art
Art in the classroom is often chaotic, messy and fun, and provides children with the opportunity to get creative and inventive, use their imaginations and practise self-expression, as well as their fine motor skills.
Exploring the work of famous artists, designers and architects in the classroom helps pupils to understand more about the world we live in, both from an aesthetic and practical point of view.
However, the classroom has physical limitations – as much as the Internet and books can provide pictures and descriptions of works of art, there really is nothing like seeing or experiencing them for yourself. Educational art visits for primary pupils help them to appreciate art history, inspire their own artistic creativity, and are hugely enjoyable. Your pupils will also be able to try different artistic techniques that they might not be able to in the classroom, such as pottery throwing, clay glazing, and mechanical art.

What does the National Curriculum say?
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
Key Stage 1 – Pupils should be taught to
• Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
• Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
• Develop a wide range of art and design techniques
• Describe the work of different artists, craft makers and designers
Key Stage 2 – Pupils should be taught to
• Create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
• Improve their mastery of art and design techniques
• Appreciate the great artists, architects and designers in history
